The fire alarm panel for our dealership resides in my department about 6 feet from my desk.
The batteries in the backup unit have failed, causing a local (or so I thought) alarm on the panel. Basically, a annoying fast beep. PLUS, there's a buzzer in the battery box as well that keeps going off. Annnnnnnd there's no way to silence either of them, short of replacing the batteries. Which are bespoke, and need to be done by the alarm company's technician. Whooooooo is a few hours away.
It's gonna be a GREAT afternoon!

that sucks. The battery back up (two car batteries on the floor) for our phone/internet routing system is right next to my desk and also lets off a annoying sound when the batteries go out. Also, our crappy surge protector/battery back up things our computers are plugged into :(

Are you legally allowed to be in the building without a working fire alarm?

It's WORKING, it's just telling me that if the power goes out, there's no batteries to KEEP it working.
Tech came and replaced them. One was swollen and cracked. There's the problem...

Wow. All of our stuff is in separate rooms/places. But they added on to this building in 2002 so that might be part of it.
Phone stuff/Camera stuff: Upstairs office in showroom
Network stuff: Upstairs back here in shop/parts
Fire alarm/Sprinkler system & pipes: Downstairs in parts

Quite. And why does it have battery backup? Because the power going out commonly coincides with a fire.

So if the power does go out, it can still send a signal to the monitoring company if there's a fire.

And sound the alarm? Or does that have a separate backup battery?

I think so.... Maybe? All I know is the fire department shows up either way.

My point was that if the alarm wasn't fully functioning, you had an excuse to evacuate the building and get away from the bleeping sound :)

You'd be surprised what they make us work through.....

Sod it. Transfer all the company's money to Vanuatu, cut the power, set fire to the servers and backups. Problem solved.
